I have read many inspiring words that have motivated me in my work and pushed me to take my artistic skills to new heights. I have been lucky to be surrounded by family and friends who have encouraged my dreams, however difficult they may be to achieve. But where do we learn to dream big? When we are little, we can be whatever we want. “Mommy, I want to be a rocket scientist!” Daddy, I want to be a famous pop star!” And many times we hear “You can be whatever you want to be.” But at some point that notion changes.

As children grow into teenagers, the idea of achieving great things by following your dreams gets stuck in what many adults call “reality.” It’s too competitive. You are not good enough. There is no safety in that kind of career. Many adults have this nasty little habit of restricting the dreams of those around them because of their own fear of failure. With all due respect, if that’s your attitude, keep it to yourself! Anyone who has contributed something significant to the world usually did so because they had an idea or a dream and had the guts to follow through and not give up.

Young people have a unique opportunity to learn to dream big by participating in the arts. Whether it’s putting together a show to perform in front of an audience in just 4 weeks or creating a mural to display in a public park, the arts teach children how to come up with an idea and carry it out. It teaches children to go beyond the limits of what they think they are capable of achieving. As adults, it is our responsibility to foster the dreams of young people, no matter how big or challenging those dreams may be to achieve. Where would Craig Kielburger be today if his dream of helping impoverished children around the world had been snuffed out? The organization, Free The Children, would not exist, and how sad that would be. Craig’s organization has impacted over a million youth in 45 countries around the world, all because at the age of 12, Craig had a dream and followed it.

So the next time you get a chance to inspire someone to dream, be it a child or an adult, do it! Because you never know when someone might catch a dream of yours and change the world forever.

YOU NEVER KNOW

you never know when someone

It can catch a dream of you.

You never know when a little word

Or something you could do

you can open the window

Of a mind that seeks the light.

The way you live may not matter at all

But you never know, it could be.

And just in case it could be

That the life of another, through you,

Could possibly change for the better,

With a wider and brighter view.

looks like it might

It’s worth a try

in pointing the way to what is right.

Of course, it may not matter at all,

but then again, it could.
