It is a fact. Although patients still need to observe a full treatment schedule to stop the internal condition that causes heartburn, there are many home remedies that will significantly alleviate your symptoms. These are the actual causes that need to be treated rather than just the symptoms if lasting relief from heartburn is to be achieved. Because LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) weakness is a major trigger, as is excess stomach acidity, it is the underlying lifestyle, dietary, and medical related causes that need to be addressed. It should be noted that additional acidity can also be triggered not only by certain types of diet and lifestyle, but also by Candida infection.

Scientific studies conducted not long ago indicate that traditional remedies may be effective. Home remedies to treat GERD have been around much longer than modern medical treatments. Examples of traditional cures that have been found helpful in reducing heartburn are:

1. Lower the foot of the bed. Doing this 6 to 8 inches will limit the upflow of stomach acid into the esophagus.

2. Sleep on your left side. Your esophagus will then be higher than your stomach, because your stomach is located in your body on the left side and your esophagus enters on the right. This reduces acid reflux.

4. Green tea can help digest food and reduce acidity, even more so when it contains ginseng.

5. Decrease the size of your meals, possibly eating more small meals per day. They are easier to digest. In addition to this, eating slowly also helps to reduce the overload on the stomach.

6. Drink water between meals. Mineral water especially can help correct the acid-alkaline balance in your digestive tract.

However, remember that while home remedies can be good for reducing symptoms, they are only one part of a comprehensive, holistic plan that is what it takes to truly treat and prevent heartburn.
