There is a lot of help out there for those who have been bullied, but what about those who actually are bullies? Unfortunately, these kinds of people are often condemned by society, from parents to school administrators and even therapists. What they don’t know is that they also need assistance, guidance and even love.

When do you become a bully?

Some people have misconceptions about bullying. They think it only happens to children and adolescents. Although common among teens, bullying happens anytime, anywhere. You can even find them in the office environment. Even parents bully their children sometimes.

You are a bully if you put other people down. You develop a need to hurt others in any way, physically, mentally, or emotionally. You let go of hurtful words. You love giving harsh criticism or insulting other people. You become prejudiced and consider that others are much inferior to you.

What is the effect of bullying for you?

You already know how bullying affects its victims. You can feel them and see them. What you should know are its possible consequences for you. First, you cannot build personal relationships. If you do, then they really don’t last very long. Second, you tend to keep that anger building up inside of you, and the worst part is that you don’t really know why you feel that way. Third, you get into a blame game and even self-hatred. You may be a bully who doesn’t want to be one but you don’t have the proper discipline to control impulses.

What can you do?

There are two things you should know. First, you need to stop the bullying before it hurts you and causes irreparable damage. Second, you definitely need help. The following tips may be helpful to you:

Get help from a professional. Find a therapist who can give you the professional help you need. Make sure the therapist is non-judgmental. This means that he or she does not see you as manipulative or cunning. The last thing you want to do is get recognition that bullying is part of who you are. It is not and should not be.

Get a lot of support from your loved ones. The moment in which you want to turn the page is the best moment to ask for support, especially emotional, from your loved ones, especially your parents and closest friends. You need to be reminded all the time of your goal, which is to change.

Inspire yourself Sometimes it feels like you can’t really change yourself. There is no place for it. If not, you’re having a hard time getting rid of things you’re used to. When you have these types of problems, you may want to use the following subliminal messages or affirmations:

“I believe in second chances.”

“I can change for the better.”

“I have a great ability to put hate and anger aside and focus more on love.”
