Basketball rules

Basketball rules came into effect on the day it was first played in 1891. International basketball rules are governed by the technical commission of the International Basketball Federation. Most leagues, including the NBA (National Basketball Association), rule by their own rules.

The main goal of basketball is to score more points by putting the ball in the opponent’s basket, which is placed ten feet above the ground. At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins. High school and recreational games are thirty-two minutes long, college and international games are forty minutes long, women’s professional games are forty minutes long, and men’s professional games are forty-eight minutes.

Umpires on the court are administrators of the basketball rules. A basketball team consists of five players. A game begins with a ‘jump between two’ in the center of the court, in which the referee throws the ball into the air and two players from each team line up in the middle of the court and attempt to direct the ball to one of the his teammates.

According to basketball rules, the team that owns the ball plays offense and the opposition plays defense, protecting their basket. The offensive team has a set time, usually thirty-five seconds, to score by passing the ball through the opponent’s basket. The player in possession of the ball cannot run or walk with the ball without dribbling (bouncing the ball off the ground). Once the player stops dribbling, the ball must be passed or shot, or it must be touched by another player before the original player can recover the ball.

According to the rules of basketball, there are two ways to score points; the first is to make a basket, which is worth 2 or 3 points, depending on the distance of the shot. The second way is to score a foul shot or a free kick, which is awarded to a player when the opponent commits a personal or technical foul. Possession of the ball alternates when the offense scores or when the defense manages to win the ball. When the attacking team misses a shot, the ball is free and all players have an equal chance of recovering the ball, which is called a rebound.
