Summarizing a safari in Kenya in one article is not the easiest thing to do (because there is so much to see and do!), but I will do my best! First off, a quick Swahili lesson: ‘safari’ is actually a Swahili word and translates to ‘journey’, so a safari isn’t necessarily a wildlife tour, it can be any kind of trip!

wildlife safari

Most of the people come to Kenya to participate in a wildlife safari. This is usually done in a 4×4 vehicle, but can also be done on horseback or camel, and even on foot in some parks with few predators. Kenya has some of the largest national parks and reserves in the world, so if you’re looking to go on an African safari and still have to choose where, don’t overlook this fantastic country. Some of the parks you should research and consider adding to your itinerary include Amboseli, Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Samburu. Each park is unique and has its own special features and ecosystems, but there is one thing you can be sure of: you will see great animals and birds in each of these parks!

Cultural Experiences

You will engage with the culture of the place simply by talking to the people while you are in Kenya, but to go a step further and take a closer look, you can take part in a tour of a tribal village. They will usually guide you through different parts of the town and introduce you to people who work different jobs in the town. When I did a similar tour in Samburu, we were welcomed with a traditional tribal dance by a group of men and a group of women, separately. After that, we were shown around one of the nomadic houses, shown where the blacksmith worked to make weapons and jewelry, and then taught about the customs of the tribe.

Monuments and landscapes

There are so many amazing places to visit in Kenya, these are just a few of them. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa by surface area, measuring around 68,800 square kilometres, it is also the largest tropical lake of its kind in the world and borders Tanzania and Uganda as well as Kenya. With stats like that, you know this lake is special! One of the great activities you can partake in while staying on the beautiful lake is heading out on a fishing trip with the local fishermen from one of the towns that surround the lake. This is a great and privileged experience to participate in, and you should do it if you have the opportunity.

Another of Kenya’s great scenic destinations is the Great Rift Valley. You get a great view of this valley stretching from Syria in Southwest Asia to Mozambique from Kenya, and it’s usually a stopping point during a Kenyan safari loop.
