Important tip: your backup is only as good as the information it contains!

I wanted to give you some important advice this week because a) it’s positively hot in Toronto, and b) this advice is so important it’s “hot” for: Absolutely critical, don’t ignore it, think about it right now!

But first, let me ask you a question: Since your backup was first set up (either by us or, heck, by someone else), have you added any new applications or created any important new folders on your computers?

As you install new programs on your computer and start filing documents into new folders, it’s vital that your backup keeps up with these changes. Not all programs store information in the standard “My Documents” folders. Consequently, new applications are not necessarily automatically added to your backup set.

QuickBooks accounting software is an example of an application that stores information in unusual locations on your computer. Purchasing and installing a new program like this would require new files to be added to your backup set for this new information to actually be backed up!
