How a watch could save your life in an emergency situation

Working with watches every day as we do, it’s hard not to notice that watches are becoming more and more technically complex.

Some models from companies like Breitling can literally save your life. They contain a number of features to assist with navigation, the most notable of which is the radio location system. The system is aimed at civilian aircrews (military personnel have their own system) hopefully if you survive the loss of your plane then the radio beacon it contains will save you from that horrible “Alive” situation.

The Breitling Emergency transmits on the 121.5 MHz aircraft emergency frequency. After a crash, the watch emits a signal that would-be rescuers can detect.

It’s probably worth saying that the clock is only really audible within a radius of about 100 miles, assuming the plane looking for it is already airborne. If no one knows you’re down (because you didn’t send a distress call from the plane), it could be a long time before they find you, since the transmitter will effectively be in line of sight.

Not too bad on a mountain, but less useful in a valley. However, when the rescue boats are scrambled, it will help them find you.

For less extreme setups, there are several watches available that can also help you track your way through rough terrain. Tissot produces a number of watches in its T-Touch range that perfectly fit the specifications.

The T Touch Expert Pilot contains a compass that allows you to follow maps and charts to a settlement or shelter. If maps are not available and you know the bearing of the city you are looking for, then you still have a chance.

Just as important in open spaces, the watch has a thermometer and barometer as part of its onboard specifications. the drop in air pressure usually represents rain or other bad weather. The watch can give vital warning of impending change in conditions, allowing you to go out of your way to find shelter.

Similar functionality can be found in the Casio Protrek range for those who prefer the digital aspect. Casio watches also contain features like tide tables to calculate when you can leave that deserted port.

Whatever your choice, simply knowing the time is always an advantage, even if it’s knowing if the pub will still be open when you return to civilization.
