Are you ready to run your home business efficiently?

Working from home can be a very rewarding experience, but to be effective you need to organize your work space for your home business so that you can work most efficiently. Anyone who has taken a ‘home study’ course will know the importance of finding a space that allows you to study quietly, without distractions and with everything you need at hand.

If you are lucky enough to have a spare room in the house available for your home business then this is ideal, even better if it is empty or can be tidied up and cleaned fairly easily. Even better if you can convert a room specifically for the purpose of running your home business. Get the right furniture and accessories if you can, it all helps to create the right “work” atmosphere. Distractions are ruin and the domestic affairs of children, friends, spouses or associates who can often assume you have ‘all day off’. Avoid, if possible, crowded and cluttered areas. If using the kitchen table or a desk in the corner of the room is the best you can manage, have a way to carry your laptop, essential files, and journal all in one go when you’re getting ready for the day. in your home business. .

Sometimes you may be lucky enough to cheaply rent or ‘borrow’ a vacant office/room or space at someone else’s business. Often working among other people, even when they are not connected to your business, can provide a good environment to be in. I would not recommend renting offices from the start unless it is essential to your customer experience, as this can be very expensive.

Working from home often means spending long periods of time, alone, staring at a computer screen. This can be quite lonely. I know people who have organized themselves so they can run their business from a laptop, then spend the day at the local sports club, use the Wi-Fi, and be around other people. By setting tasks that can be accomplished by these means, the inevitable well-intentioned interruptions and occasional workouts at the gym become a social part of the day, but the comfort of mingling with others, regardless of their interest in your business. It can be quite nice. However, you need to work at least part of the time both in private and without distractions.

So when finding a work space for your home business, here are some options you can choose from. It will often be the one you can get the most easily. They are listed in order of preference:

  1. Dedicated office space-Your own dedicated office designed for your business either in your home or garden.
  2. dedicated desktop– Your own dedicated desk space for your home business, or perhaps a desk at someone else’s premises.
  3. Shared space– Your own dedicated desk space for your business, but in a quiet room or area of the house where you can work undisturbed. For example, your bedroom.
  4. shared desktop– A quiet area of the house where you can work undisturbed, but need to place your laptop and home business essentials every time. For example, the kitchen table.
  5. roaming– Work away from home on your home business in a coffee shop, sports club or semi-public place where you are allowed to do so using a laptop and Wi-Fi. (Note: Often this option can be used, say, once a week to just get out of the house and be with other humans.)

Start your home business at whatever level you can and then work your way up!

In my own business I started at number 5 and after a couple of years as things take off the situation improves, I am now number 1!

Now that you have your space, the important thing is to organize it properly so that it adapts to your home business. I will cover this in my next article.
