Surprisingly, it is not always the search for the truth that leads to the paternity investigation. The effects of being out of work have prompted an increasing number of men to take a DNA paternity test to address an out-of-control financial situation. Paternity test results could reveal a shocking case of paternity fraud, paternity error, or the plain truth.

In more than five years of working with underemployed and unemployed parents, there have been some interesting moments while teaching a critical thinking life skills class. The workshop was intended to educate and challenge men in their choices about intimacy, love, dating, and marriage. Male attendees (underemployed/unemployed fathers) ran the gamut from high school dropouts to college graduates and former entrepreneurs.

There was a common thread among the men who attended the workshop, that some regretted choosing the child’s other father.

Perhaps it was a not so serious attitude of “enjoy the fun now” without thinking of the long or short term consequences, that resulted in the problems in question? Perhaps it is so, for quite a few of the men.

While other men stated reasons such as:

  • latex sensitivity
  • low willpower
  • hypnotic curves
  • Impaired by Alcoholic Beverages or Substance Abuse
  • design inability
  • Misuse of contraceptive options
  • Non-use of contraceptive options, including abstinence.

Some might have assured that he would not become a father before he was ready, willing and able to take on the role. Unfortunately, contraceptive options, not even abstinence, can guarantee men’s health and safety against paternity fraud.

Paternity fraud poses a significant problem for men and boys who are proven not to be the father through DNA paternity testing. If the discovery is deemed too late, the family court has the power to ignore the results of the DNA test, even if it proves that the accused man or teenager is not the father of the child.

The growing list of paternity fraud victims includes:

  1. Armed Forces Men
  2. Married but separated men
  3. confirmed sterility
  4. Married and Living Together
  5. professional athletes
  6. Businessmen / Entrepreneurs
  7. Single Men and Adolescent Boys Signing Acknowledgments of Paternity (AOPs)

For some men the paternity test report shows “you are the father” and for others “you are not the father”. It may be a dance floor for some, while others are deeply hurt and saddened by the earnings report.

Truthful paternity is very important to many men, especially when there is uncertainty about paternity.

An extremely wise President Reagan was often quoted as saying “Trust, but verify.” He appears to be suitable when he walks into an explosive paternity fraud landmine.
