Ballet costumes for adults: how to take care of your tutu

There are so many different types of adult ballet costumes, but the tutu is standard in the ballet world and is a milestone in a dancer’s career. Whatever the reason for purchasing a tutu, be it a student recital or perhaps simply to advance your class further, your investment should not be taken lightly. You want as many hours of happy dancing as you can in your tutu. The problem is that its care and maintenance is not exactly convenient: you cannot just throw it in the washing machine.

On the other hand, not washing it also shortens the life of the skirt, as sweat and dirt basically cause the skirt to rot.

So how to take care of your tutu.

Step 1: Remove the hoop. Keeping the ring dry will prevent it from rusting.

Step 2. If your tutu is designed for, remove the trimmings. If beads and sequins are sewn or glued directly onto the tutu, they may bleed into the fabric.

Step 3: hand wash the bathtub. This will prevent the skirt from losing its shape.

Step 4: Use a small amount of detergent in warm water.

Step 5: Hang to dry inside out, using a tutu hanger, preferably, to hold its shape. Attach the skirt to the sides of the panty, not the crotch, to avoid stretching the material.

Regular care of your tutu will extend its lifespan and provide you with many more days of happy dancing. It is important to take good care of your dance clothes, since your costumes are an investment, but that is a topic for another blog.
