The US Virgin Islands is much more than its vibrant, heavily backed tropical beach scene. Point out, for example, the unique marriage of urban lifestyle and tropical island setting embodied by two of the pleasing to the eye; the Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas and the Under the Sun Art Gallery in St. John.

Big Haven Yacht

Recognized as one of the largest business capitals in the Caribbean, St. Thomas decorates entire streets of downtown Charlotte Amalie with the healthy bustle of duty-free shops, souvenir shops, and local craft shops. However, what sets St. Thomas apart from other island destinations when it comes to shopping is Yacht Haven Grande, located along the picturesque Charlotte Amalie harbor.

It is said that describing YHC as a shopping center is a great injustice. Because even though it’s packed with duty-free shops and high-end designer stores, the 80,000-square-foot facility offers more; exciting dining, recreational and entertainment services, and seaside residences. Wasn’t it impressed? Here’s the catch; it is complemented by a 48-boat megayacht marina.

Basically, it can take you a whole day to explore this behemoth of a beauty. Stroll the brick walkways near upscale stores like Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Max Azria’s BCBG; Take a look at the mega yachts that come to the huge marina or enjoy an oceanfront dinner. There is always something for everyone at Yacht Haven Grande.

Under the Sun Art Gallery

To appreciate the fine arts, the Under the Sun Art Gallery on St. John is the place to be. Just a five-minute walk from the Cruz Bay ferry dock, this cozy three-room gallery sits within the sculpted stone walls of the infamous Mongoose Junction, another commercial district in the United States Virgin Islands.

A highly regarded art gallery in the Caribbean, Bajo el Sol, features the work of Livy Hitchcock (owner), Aimee Trayer (former owner), and other local artists. The artist’s distinctive works, displayed in every medium available and imaginable, capture and reflect the beauty and charm of romantic St. John.

Whatever you are looking for, be it traditional pastel pieces, muted oil paintings, sea grape bowls and vases, or geokenitic metal and glass shard sculptures, you will find them here.

The United States Virgin Islands are truly a wonder to behold. The bold blend of urban style and tropical island setting, showcased by both Yacht Haven Grande and the Bajo el Sol Art Gallery, offers unique tourist insights into Caribbean life.
