What can I do to improve indoor air quality?

  • Use products that emit the lowest levels of chemicals, especially cleaning products. If you’re remodeling, use building materials and furnishings that emit fewer toxins.
  • Clean your home regularly to prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, and pet hair.
  • Inspect, clean, or replace heating and ventilation system filters on a regular maintenance cycle according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Plan for routine seasonal maintenance of your HVAC equipment to ensure they are working properly and performing as intended. This is particularly important in the fall before the heating season begins.
  • Make sure clothes dryers exhaust directly outside and make sure filters and hoods are clean to maintain maximum airflow. Check exhaust ducts to make sure they are free of trapped lint, which not only affects air quality, but can also be a safety issue.
  • Make sure continuous ventilation is provided in addition to intermittent systems to maintain overall air quality. Increase ventilation rates during family gatherings and parties to keep the air fresh.
  • Turn on your range hood (which vents directly outside) when you cook to expel moisture and orders as you cook.
  • Operate the bathroom exhaust fan when bathing and showering and leave it on for at least 20 minutes to remove moisture.
  • Consider installing a humidistat control on your fan so you don’t have to remember when to turn it off or turn it off before the humidity level drops. This is particularly important in the warmer months when the air contains more moisture.
  • Install and use exhaust fans in craft rooms and attached garages to ventilate chemicals that may be used particularly in these areas.
  • Select HVI certified ventilation products for your home to ensure airflow, sound and energy performance expectations are met or exceeded.
