How to Handle a Foreclosure Cleanup Job When a Home Has No Power

Many houses that have been repossessed will not have electricity. Ideally, the real estate agent handling the job should turn on the power so they can effectively handle the foreclosure cleanup job. But in many cases, you’ll have to work without power (which often means no hot water, and it’s hard to clean without hot water!).

Now, you can walk away from those jobs or you can buy a small gasoline generator. Our first generator was a 1200 watt generator.

We bought the generator from Wal-Mart in our area. It works great, it’s lightweight, easy to transport and it’s pretty simple to operate and perfect for most jobs. (It’s a bit noisy, but that wasn’t a problem for us). We paid just under $200 dollars for it.

As you grow older, you may want to consider investing in a more powerful generator, which can cost upwards of $1,000.

You can rent generators from stores like The Home Depot, but it will cost you. See the approximate rental costs below according to the power of the generator:

–3000 Watts $39 for 4 hours / $56 per day

–6500 Watts, $49 for 4 hours / $70 per day

I suggest not buying a generator until your company can actually afford it and not renting one unless you’re charging enough to make a profit on the job. There are enough jobs in homes with electricity to get you started in this business. Consider tackling those jobs first.

You may have to quit some jobs because you are not equipped to handle them. Alright; Start small and grow as your finances allow you to grow. Remember, you are in this for the long haul.
