Everyone knows that Great Danes are one of our largest dog breeds. Not only are they tall, they also have a lot of love to give and are very devoted to their owners. They are a race that truly appreciates human contact and companionship. They couldn’t be happier than spending the entire day with their adoptive family! Wow, these dogs can grow big! An average Great Dane will be seven meters tall when standing on its hind legs, so it is possible that they will rest their front limbs on your shoulders and give you a nice slobbery kiss. In terms of weight, you can expect around 170 pounds; This will not be a puppy you can carry in your purse!

As long as they receive obedience training from a young age, young children do not have to be feared by Great Danes, who can be a bit intimidated by them on the first encounter. They actually love children, so you shouldn’t worry about bringing such a dog into your family home. Often called ‘gentle giants’, the Great Dane will grow surprisingly fast from birth, but will then fall into a slow phase and take up to three years to fully mature. As we mentioned before, his favorite hobby is being with you and the rest of the family; They will literally be on your heels, whatever you hope to do. Although they are perfectly happy to be indoors with their owners, they should have the option of a large backyard to stretch their limbs and bounce freely.

It also doesn’t stop at a large backyard; You must remember that due to their size and weight, they have a lot of power and can easily knock down a fence or gate if they simply leaned against it. A strong fence and barrier from the outside world is a must for their safety and yours. Never leave them in the garden if they do not have an area protected from sunlight and bad weather conditions. These giants need a lot of water, so do yourself a favor and buy a good-sized pot and always fill it with fresh water throughout the day. What else will you need to buy for your new friend? – Lots of toys, of course! They can be a bit hyperactive, especially when they are puppies and will need a lot of toys to entertain themselves.

Large dogs smear and drool a lot, which can be a major inconvenience for some people. If you think you can’t live with this or handle the occasional drool on your slippers, then a Great Dane might not be the best dog option for you, however it is less of a problem with such a wonderful and caring dog. Another important point to note is that they feel very lonely when they are left without good company; it would be ideal if you had a lot of free time for them.

Despite having a large body, they can be very susceptible to injury and exercise should be kept fairly calm. Don’t encourage them to jump too much or participate in strenuous or prolonged activities. One thing is for sure – any potential intruder in your home will think twice if they know what breed of dog is kept behind that door, and when they sense a stranger approaching, they can create a terrifying bark or growl!

Grooming is very low maintenance in Great Danes who have short hair. However, brushing or combing your hair once a week will benefit them, stimulating good blood circulation and providing essential nutrients to the skin and coat. It’s good ‘try before you buy’ advice when it comes to Great Danes because everyone, while incredibly caring, can demand your time. Visit a breeder and ask to spend time with your dogs to learn about their behavior and needs; otherwise congratulations on choosing a Great Dane, they really are a spectacular breed!
