One thing most people want is to lose weight quickly, and there is nothing wrong with that if you can do it safely. In theory, it is possible to lose up to 20 pounds in a week with proper diet and exercise. Most people cannot fully dedicate themselves to their 7-hour-a-day weight loss program and workouts, which is necessary for that type of plan.

A big change in diet and exercise can be very taxing on the system, and any program designed to lose weight quickly must be closely monitored by a physician. A more realistic weight loss goal of 3 to 5 pounds per week will require a great deal of weight training and a sensible diet, but is much more manageable for the person with a full career and personal life.

As I always emphasize, motivation is the support system you need to lose weight quickly, and if there are any special events in your life that warrant cutting back, it can be a temporary motivator. A wedding or class reunion may be the trigger that starts your weight loss attempt, but there are two important factors to consider when beginning your weight loss journey.

Time to do homework

If the event you want to look good is months away, that gives you time to trim some fat and weight in a healthy way. If your time frame is just a week or two before an event, you can’t expect to have a drastic reduction. Attempting to do so will only result in loss of confidence and depression.

Adopt other forms of motivation

If you want to lose weight quickly for a one-time event, you will fall back into your old habits after the event is over. You may want to look good for certain occasions in your life, but that won’t keep you motivated to stay at the perfect size and weight that you want to achieve and maintain.

If the only reason you want to look good is to impress a few people at a single event, that’s not the best motivational take on weight management. A much broader goal would be one where you want to look good every day, not just at an event. Your weight loss goal should be realistic and achievable, but significant enough to be rewarding when you do.

The choice is yours. Either develop a lifestyle so you are healthier, feel better, and look slim and fit on a regular basis, or you can go the fad diet route and drop a few pounds or inches, just to get them back right away.

Keep in mind, too, that leading a healthy lifestyle with a regular exercise program and a proper diet offers many rewards; you will feel better, live longer, and look your best; Not worth it?
