After a long wait, Samsung has finally revealed details about its new Galaxy S3 device, the successor to the successful Samsung Galaxy S2. Hundreds of rumors have been circulating about the specs of this new device, but now we can finally see how the model stacks up against some of the other leading devices currently available. First up is the iPhone 4S, so we take a look at the design and display quality on both models.

Despite the fact that the iPhone 4S uses the same chassis as the iPhone 4, the model still has a striking appearance that makes it one of the most desirable phones on the market. The phones sport an unusual glass design consisting of two glass panels that form the front and back of the phone. An attractive metal strip is sandwiched between these two panels. Apple offers the phone in the traditional black finish and also in a white version that looks great. In terms of dimensions, the phone measures 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, making it one of the most compact phones out there, while the considerable weight of 140 grams makes the phone feel very well builded. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a much larger screen than the iPhone 4S and therefore the phone is physically larger. The phone measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm but despite the extra size, the models still weigh less than Apple’s phone at just 133 grams. The model sports a much more curved design than its predecessor and the iPhone and this works well with the rather large size of the phone. Although it is difficult to choose between the two models to design, Apple’s phone has the advantage when it comes to build quality. The S3 is built mostly from plastics that lack the premium feel that the glass of the 4S offers.

The iPhone 4S set the standard for mobile displays, and even at over six months old, the model still boasts some of the best quality available. The model uses a 3.5-inch LED-backlit LCD screen that can display an impressive resolution of 960 x 640 pixels. This means that the model can offer an excellent pixel density of 330PPI. The screen is also highly durable and is treated with a special oleophobic coating to help repel fingerprints. The new Samsung Galaxy S3 uses a very large 4.7-inch AMOLED screen. Samsung has worked hard to try to make this display compete with the Retina display offered on the 4S. The model displays a massive 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, but despite that being a much higher resolution than the iPhone, the extra screen size means the pixel density is 306 PPI, which is less than what it can deliver. the 4S. It is very difficult to choose between the two models in this area. The iPhone has the edge when it comes to image quality, but on a fairly small screen. Samsung’s screen size impresses us more, but a bit of quality is sacrificed to accommodate a screen of this size.

Despite being several months old, the iPhone 4S still offers a nicer design than its rival thanks to its all-glass construction and excellent build quality. When it comes to display technology, there’s little to choose between the two phones. Consumers will finally decide whether they want a more compact screen with the best image quality in the 4S or a larger screen perfect for multimedia use in the new S3.
