All I can say is WOW … I just watched the first episode of Basketball Wives, the new reality series on VH1 produced by Shaunie O’Neal (ex-wife of NBA star Shaquille O’Neal) and all What I can say is “WOW”. Now I must admit that my guilty pleasure is the Housewives series about Bravo; I see them all in Orange County, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta … it’s incredibly entertaining and downright funny. So I started watching Basketball Wives with a preconceived notion of what to expect … and it was everything I thought it was going to be and more. As I watched it, I had to take some notes so that I could remember all the nonsense I endured for more than 20 minutes. I want to introduce all the players, I think it’s the best way to prepare them for the premiere on Sunday, April 11 at 10:00 ET / PT.

Let’s start with Shaunie “Momma” O’Neal. As we all know, Shaunie was married to Shaq, their on-and-off marriage was marred by rumors and incidents of infidelity. Shaunie says her goal with the series is to shed light on the complex lives of women who stand alongside larger-than-life professional athletes and show the world that it is not all glitz and glamor as it may seem. Let’s be real here for a minute, I don’t know about you, but the only people who seem to think that relationships with these professional athletes are all glitz and glamor are the women who get involved in these relationships. Trust me, Biggie taught us years ago that ‘more money, more problems’. Shaunie appears as Queen Bee sitting on her throne as these women come to her for advice on their husbands, dads, ex-boyfriends, boyfriends, whatever they call them, playing basketball. She is definitely the mom figure in these episodes, and she thinks they should all stick together because this is a hectic and important sisterhood that everyone is a part of. Well … I don’t know about that, but the only thing that makes them different from all the millions of other married women around the world is the professional these men have, which I am inclined to believe is brainwashing these women to believe. that their lives and families can rival those of the kings and queens of countries near and far.

Then there is Royce. She is the mother of Orlando Magic’s daughter Dwight Howard, who will never hear her mentioned on the show as Howard received a court order prohibiting him from mentioning her name. Going into this, Royce has so many blows against him. The other women believe that she is the quintessential stereotypical groupie, and I agree with them. Royce is a dancer (and I use that term loosely, because being from the house of the famous Magic City I call her something else … if you know what I mean) who danced for both the Magic and the Heat and started her own Burlesque Dance Company called Fantashique that travels all over Florida. I haven’t really made up my mind about Royce because in a minute she shows her butt and drops it like she’s hot at a pool party hosted by Terrell Owens, or on a stripper pole at a Miami nightclub, and at next is crying talking. he wants to go home because nobody likes him. To be a 29-year-old mother, this little girl has to grow a lot. And what I think amazes me so much is that she doesn’t understand why other women don’t like her, or that many others label her a ‘gold digger’. Come on son! At the end of the first episode, the wives ambushed Royce for a raunchy dance at the party and informed him that his behavior is a reflection of all of them, not just her.

Now let’s move on to Jennifer, the wife of basketball player Eric Williams. Now, I like this one, even though her marriage is falling apart in every corner, she seems to be the most realistic, the one whose head is not so in the clouds. Not only is Jennifer sitting at home watching soap operas and eating chocolates, she is a high-level real estate agent and owner of an exclusive women’s gym, Flirty Girl Fitness. Now the relationship with Jennifer and her husband Eric is a bit, how should I put it, dysfunctional. Jennifer doesn’t call Eric her husband in public and he has the ‘rule’ that when he’s on the road, he goes on tour, but when he’s home, he’s home with her. Now I just have to shake my head at that, because all it does is show me that here is a successful woman who has traded her self-esteem for a lifetime supply of Gucci and Jimmy Choos. As the series progresses, we learn more about Jennifer and Eric and what they are going to do with this dysfunction they live in.

Suzie Ketcham is the ex-wife of basketball player Michael Olowokondi, who is a bona fide partygoer and social butterfly. Suzie is on the VIP list of all clubs, has invitations to the hottest parties, and meets the hottest celebrities and athletes. Suzie met Michael while attending college and in her senior year was pregnant with the couple’s first child. Suzie reminds me of Shaunie, she is diluted in her belief that being a player’s wife or ex-wife is not a lifestyle, it is a career you train for on the job and you are an employee for life with all the advantages and benefits. Benefits. Suzie and Michael have two children together and were together for 10 years before parting ways. Suzie believes that she knows all the extremes and exits of the “game” and is always more than willing to give her opinion, even if no one asked for her.

Then there is the Puerto Rican beauty Evelyn, who is from the Bronx and is the ex-fiancee of Antoine Walker. Evelyn and Antoine were together for a little over 10 years before she said she got tired of all the lies and cheating; well that’s at least what she said about the story. I can’t believe this woman has let her relationship with this man last for more than 10 years and without a “real” commitment. Wake up … engagement was just the waiting pattern that worked for 10 years so that you could be engaged and he could continue to live the superstar lifestyle that he was leading. Evelyn is living in Miami starting over and constantly crying for how she is struggling because there is no more shopping and overspending … PLEASE give me a break! Evelyn has taken advantage of the lifestyle for all she has to give and is now on the next one.

Finally there is Gloria, who is the only one who feels that she has her things together. Gloria is engaged to Matt Barnes, whom she met at the age of 12. After years apart, Gloria and Matt reconnected when Matt was playing ball near his hometown of Oakland. The couple have twin 16-month-old children, and at the age of 24, Gloria is trying to focus on her own business and charities outside of basketball, but she is the only charity she participates in in the Matt Barnes charity. . Now the drama with Gloria is that the other women constantly tell her that it won’t be like this forever, him. [Matt] He will fool you, there will be groupies, but there is an awkward relationship with Shaunie, because Gloria’s sister is rumored to be sleeping with Shaq. WOOF! From what I saw in the first episode, Gloria doesn’t even care what other people think, she believes in her fairy tale life and will put money on Matt not being like everyone else.

Well like I said, I knew what I was getting into before I watched the show, but I was hoping to see at least one couple focused on the earth and showing the support of what a real family unit was. In the first episode, don’t expect the drama, the hair pulling, the club fights, all these antics will appear in future episodes. In general, it is the typical reality show full of glitter, champagne, mansions, cars, clothes, and of course, the men. After the first episode, let me know what you think, and every week look for a new post on the latest episode of Basketball Wives. Until next time …
